Shielding Zion’s Protectors: Upgrading Body Armor for Law Enforcement Rangers
When danger calls, Zion National Park’s Law Enforcement Rangers answer, whether confronting armed threats, aiding in rescues, or ensuring visitor safety. In these critical moments, having reliable protective equipment can mean the difference between life and death. That’s why Zion is prioritizing the replacement of its expired Level IV body armor, a critical lifesaving PPE for law enforcement officers.
“Law enforcement in the wilderness comes with unique challenges,” said William See, Project Lead. “We don’t just need to be prepared—we need to be equipped with the best to protect ourselves and the public.”
Zion’s rangers face an unparalleled variety of emergencies. From search-and-rescue operations deep in the park’s rugged terrain to handling high-stakes situations like active shooter incidents or assisting in multi-agency responses, they must adapt to any challenge. Often operating far from backup, they rely on protective gear that allows them to focus on their mission without hesitation.
The current Level IV armor, purchased in 2016, has reached the end of its manufacturer's warranty, leaving officers without guaranteed protection against high-velocity rifle rounds. This replacement project ensures that Zion’s 15 rangers receive custom-fitted hard armor, designed to withstand the extreme conditions of front county and wilderness law enforcement. From active shooter incidents to joint operations with local agencies, this armor will provide the safety and confidence rangers need to do their job effectively.
Beyond Zion’s borders, these rangers often respond to emergencies in surrounding communities. Their work represents a lifeline for a rapidly growing region where resources are often stretched thin. “This isn’t just about our rangers—it’s about creating a safer environment for everyone who relies on us,” See added.
Through donor support, this project will deliver the tools needed to protect Zion’s rangers as they safeguard the park and its visitors, ensuring they can continue their essential work with confidence and security.
