Fire Personal Protective Equipment Project

Fire Personal Protective Equipment Project

In the intense heat of a wildfire or the toxic aftermath of a structural fire, a firefighter’s gear is everything. At Zion National Park, much of this critical personal protective equipment (PPE) is nearing the end of its functional lifespan. The Fire PPE Project seeks to ensure the park’s firefighters have state-of-the-art gear that balances ultimate protection with comfort—an essential combination for safety in high-stakes situations.

“Protecting our park starts with providing our people the best protection,” said Matt Wineteer, Project Lead. “Every firefighter deserves the right gear to safely serve and protect our park and community.”

Zion’s firefighters face unique challenges. The park’s remote location often requires them to battle flames longer than urban crews, enduring high heat and exposure to carcinogens from burning plastics and chemicals. Outdated or ill-fitting gear can increase these risks, leaving firefighters vulnerable to burns, heat stress, and long-term health complications. Advances in PPE technology now offer flame-resistant materials that are lighter, more breathable, and better suited for the demanding conditions firefighters encounter.

This project will replace worn-out gear with NFPA-compliant PPE, including flame-resistant wildland suits, turnout boots, gloves, and helmets. With improved fit and functionality, this gear ensures firefighters can move freely and safely, maintaining their focus during critical operations. “Firefighting isn’t just about the fire—it’s about the people,” Wineteer explained. “This gear allows us to protect them without compromise.”

Over the past five years, Zion’s firefighters have saved structures, preserved natural landscapes, and even prevented fires from spreading to nearby communities. With donor support, the Fire PPE Project will provide the equipment needed to sustain these heroic efforts, safeguarding Zion’s people and places for years to come.
