Zion Youth Stewards: Shaping the Leaders of Tomorrow

Zion Youth Stewards: Shaping the Leaders of Tomorrow

What does it take to inspire the next generation of environmental stewards? Zion National Park’s Youth Stewards Program (ZYS) has the answer: hands-on experiences, meaningful connections, and the opportunity to see themselves as both protectors and participants in the natural world.

This innovative program invites underserved youth, ages 14 to 19, into Zion National Park for immersive activities that blend recreation, stewardship, and career development. By engaging in conservation projects, learning essential outdoor skills, and exploring career pathways within the National Park Service, these young participants gain more than knowledge—they gain a sense of belonging and empowerment.

“Zion Youth Stewards doesn’t just welcome youth into Zion National Park—it teaches them that they belong in outdoor spaces as recreators and, someday, as professionals,” shared Lindsey Baker, Project Lead. “I hope that in three to five years, some of these campers return as interns and rangers, continuing to reach new audiences with programs we haven’t even imagined yet.”

Each participant in ZYS spends at least 30 hours immersed in program activities, including two visits to Zion. These visits are packed with opportunities: youth work alongside rangers on conservation projects like graffiti removal, trail maintenance, and native seed collection, while also enjoying high-adventure hikes and team-building exercises. Additionally, participants complete capstone projects, showcasing their skills and knowledge while receiving official certificates of completion—valuable additions to any resume or college application.

The impact of ZYS extends far beyond the park’s boundaries. By fostering an ethic of stewardship and introducing local youth to outdoor careers, the program ensures that Zion’s legacy of protection and conservation continues for generations.
