Supporting the Junior Ranger Program: Inspiring Young Stewards

In the heart of Zion National Park, young explorers take their first steps toward becoming lifelong stewards of public lands. The Junior Ranger Program provides children with a unique opportunity to explore, learn, and connect with the park’s natural and cultural wonders. Through this interactive program, Zion rangers inspire curiosity, deepen understanding, and cultivate a commitment to preserving our nation’s treasures.

“When Zion National Park Rangers interact with youth through this project, it has the great potential to spark curiosity in them,” shared Jorge Hernandez, Project Lead. “When a visitor receives their Junior Ranger badge after completing the handbook, it’s a proud moment for them and their families.”

The program’s popularity is undeniable. In 2024 alone, over 45,000 Junior Ranger booklets were distributed, with about 25,000 children proudly earning their Junior Ranger badges. These badges are more than a keepsake—they represent a tangible connection to the values of Leave No Trace and environmental stewardship.

At the Zion Nature Center, park rangers create immersive experiences, including interactive exhibits, scavenger hunts, and ranger-led programs. For many families, these activities provide an engaging introduction to the park’s ecosystems and the principles of conservation. Importantly, the program is evolving, with new initiatives like bilingual Junior Ranger programming aimed at reaching even more visitors.

“Every year is an exciting time for Zion’s Junior Ranger program,” Hernandez noted. “We look forward to creating new, innovative ways to engage youth and families.”
