Concrete to Canyons: Building Lifelong Connections to Nature
For more than a decade, the Concrete-to-Canyons program has transformed Zion National Park into a classroom under the stars for fifth-grade students from Title I schools in Las Vegas and Mesquite, Nevada. This three-day, two-night camping experience introduces students to Zion’s breathtaking landscapes, builds their confidence in outdoor settings, and fosters a lifelong connection to public lands.
“This program is about breaking down barriers,” said Billie Rayford, a former board president and current member of the Zion Forever Project, who championed the program’s creation. “For many of these students, it’s their first encounter with the outdoors, and it’s amazing to see their growth in just a few days.”
Concrete-to-Canyons is far more than a simple camping trip. Students engage in hands-on activities like pitching tents, exploring Zion’s trails, and learning Leave No Trace principles. The program integrates lessons aligned with Nevada State Curriculum Standards, connecting classroom concepts to real-world experiences in nature. Rangers introduce students to careers in the National Park Service, providing glimpses into the many roles that sustain public lands. The experience culminates with a hike through the iconic Narrows, leaving participants with memories that last a lifetime.
Amanda Rowland, Zion’s Program Manager Interpretation and Visitor Services, has worked on the program since its inception. “This is not just a field trip—it’s an opportunity to change lives,” she said. “We’ve even had past participants return as adults to volunteer or work in the park, inspired by their time here as kids.”
Funded by the Zion Forever Project, the program ensures access by covering all expenses, including transportation, meals, and camping gear. Collaborations with organizations like the National Park Foundation and partnerships with other parks, including Lake Mead National Recreation Area and Dinosaur National Monument, expand its reach, introducing students to a broader spectrum of natural landscapes and environmental stewardship.
The ripple effects of the program are profound. Many students develop a newfound appreciation for nature and a sense of responsibility toward its preservation. Some even pursue careers in environmental science or public service. As one student shared, “Before coming here, I didn’t know places like this existed. It’s amazing.”
By supporting Concrete-to-Canyons, donors are investing in a future where public lands are cherished and protected by the next generation of stewards. Contributions ensure this program continues to break down barriers, inspire wonder, and change lives.
