Winter photography class in Zion National Park near Checkerboard Mesa. Instructor Michael Plyler.

Zion Canyon Field Institute (ZCFI) is pleased to announce its Winter lineup of classes for 2008.

February 2 brings Native Plant Seed Propagation where participants will be able to join USU horticulture extension specialist, Rick Hefflebower, to learn more about propagating and using native plants.

With water as a critical issue for Southern Utah of late, join ZCFI on February 9 for Water in the Desert. In this class we will look at where at water comes from and where it goes. Learn the history of western water rights and examine water from resource management, political, and social perspectives. What does our water future look like? Do we have the will and the power to control that future? Learn simple things you as an individual can do to conserve water use in your everyday life.

On February 16 join a ZCFI naturalist for Winter in Zion. Examine the effects of winter on the geology, plants, and animals of Zion National Park and its surrounds.

Organic Gardening on February 23 will cover the basics of creating and maintaining an organic vegetable garden in the desert southwest. If you can learn to successfully garden here, you can do it anywhere.

Please note that Native Plant Seed Propagation, and Organic Gardening are part of the “Botany Trilogy” of classes which also includes Native Plants and Xeriscaping on March 22. A $20 discount will be given to participants registering for all three at once. However, ZNHA members will not receive their membership discount in addition to the “trilogy discount.”

The Fern and J.L. Crawford Lecture Series continues in January and February as well.
On January 5 geologist and author, Wayne Ranney, presents “Carving Grand Canyon,” and February 8 brings Christa Sadler presenting “Life in Stone: The Extraordinary History of Life in our Backyard.” Both lectures are free and open to the public and start at 7:30 pm at the Canyon Community Center in Springdale, Utah. The center is located at 126 Lion Boulevard immediately adjacent to Springdale Town Hall.
