Zion Album - A Nostalgic History of Zion Canyon (2074)

9" (23 cm) wide x 9" (23 cm) high
88 pages
by J. L. Crawford

This collection of hand-painted glass lantern slides was used by early park naturalists in their illustrated talks before the advent of color photography. Rediscovered in the mid 1980’s by J. L. Crawford, they give us a glimpse of some of the pre-history, exploration and settlement of Zion Canyon. Mr. Crawford was born on a farm near the site of the present day Zion Canyon Visitor Center, and worked as a park ranger in the late 1940’s and 1970’s. He hopes that by sharing these hand painted relics of the early days of Zion, that you will get the story, in brief, almost like the first park naturalists told it.
