Notes on Painting Light by Peter Nisbet

CLASS FILLED

Thursday, November 3, 2011
Artist Peter Nisbet

This is intended to be an introductory review of the problems facing plein-air painters in the Western landscape. In a short two hour period it is not possible to grasp the full spectrum of issues facing the plein-air painter working in the brilliant Southwestern light. What can be accomplished, however, is a review and understanding of the approaches to working with light on canvas.
My methodology is to pre-visualize the scene as a monochromatic painting in order to better grasp the way that light is working. I will teach how to execute a fast black and white underpainting which can then be translated into a color field sketch. I will do this while discussing light related matters such as value transitions and the effects that allude to the impression of light.
This brief workshop will highlight some of the important points that I teach in my more intensive four and five day workshops in Santa Fe and Tucson. Participants should be able to see light in a more approachable way as a result of our short interactions. Participants will be asked to paint by my side and I will offer critiques as a way of supporting the ideas that I will be presenting.
