**NEW**
A Century of Sanctuary
The Art of Zion National Park-
Softbound and Hardcover

Zion’s Centennial year will be formally ushered in by a tremendous art exhibition opening at the St George Art Museum on August 25, 2008. In conjunction with the opening of the show, Zion Natural History Association will release its most ambitious and beautiful publishing project to date. This stunning coffee table book contains more than 150 of the most magnificent images of Zion National Park ever printed.

Historical paintings include works by Thomas Moran, Lewis A. Ramsey, Maynard Dixon, Frederick S. Dellenbaugh, Howard Russell Butler, Alfred W. Lambourne, John B. Fairbanks, Isaac Loren Covington and many other iconic Zion artists.

Contemporary paintings included in the book are the result of an international call for entries in a competition for the Centennial of Zion National Park. Sixty eight paintings were selected from more than 500 pieces submitted from 38 states and several foreign countries. What a variety of talent and interpretations were seen among the submissions.

Now all of this art will be hung in the St. George Art Museum from August 25, 2008 until January 24, 2009 for all to see and they can be viewed at any time in the pages of ZNHA’s wonderful new book.

The book includes several astounding essays on the art of Zion. From Leslie Courtright, Curator of the Zion National Park Museum Collection, learn about seven significant paintings by Howard Russell Butler which have recently come home to Zion from the Buffalo Museum of Science in Buffalo, New York. Painted in 1926, the Butler paintings played a key role in exciting interest in visitation to the park.

Another interesting essay by famed Zion Artist, Roland Lee, demonstrates his step by step process of capturing the beauty of Zion on canvas.

The exciting story about the connection between a local country boy, Frederick S. Dellenbaugh and the 1904 World’s Fair is artfully told in an essay by Lyman Hafen.

An essay titled, ‘Contemplating the Extraordinary in Nature: Artists and Aesthetic Conservation’ is written by Peter Hassrick. Peter, the Director of the Petrie Institute of Western American Art at the Denver Art Museum, was selected to be the juror of the Contemporary Art Competition.

And for art enthusiasts, Deborah Reeder of the St. George Art Museum gives a detailed account of the different styles and artists who have been capturing Zion through their art for over a century.

**New** Images of America
ZION NATIONAL PARK (9780738558943)

On July 31, 1909, Pres. William Howard Taft authorized the creation of Mukuntuweap National Monument in southern Utah. Encompassing miles of rugged mountain peaks towering above the Virgin River, the national monument was renamed Zion and designated as a national park in 1919, The area originally inhabited by Native Americans, was settled by Mormon pioneers in the early 1860s. As the beauty of the region gained national fame, roads were constructed, tourist accommodations were established, and from 1927 to 1930, the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel, a 5,613-foot-long engineering wonder, was constructed. Recognized around the world for its geologic, scenic, and historic value, Zion, Utah's first national park, draws millions of visitors each year.

2008 Collectable Zion National Park Christmas Ornament

For the first time, ZNHA is introducing a special holiday ornament produced in a limited edition and available first to our members. This delicate ball is a hand-painted reproduction of a painting by Shannon Eberhard. Shannon’s image is reminiscent of her painting which was selected to represent Zion National Park on the official White House Christmas Tree in 2007. That 18-foot Fraser fir was bedecked with hundreds of handmade ornaments depicting the national parks. As NPS Director Mary Bomar put it, “Each ornament was designed by an artist selected by the park to tell the stories of our parks, just as our parks tell the stories of our nation.”
ZNHA commissioned Shannon to paint a winter scene in Zion reminiscent of the one on her White House ornament. We have produced 500 hand-painted ornaments for this holiday season and we are looking forward to the 2009 Centennial Collector Ornament available early next year.

A Field Guide to Rock Art Symbols of the Greater Southwest (2223)

7" (18 cm) wide x 9" (23 cm) high
256 pages
by Alex Patterson

This is the first specifically designed key to the interpretation of American rock art. Interest in the subject has grown significantly among professional archaeologists and informed lay persons in recent years, but the purpose and meaning that the intriguing symbols had for their creators remain a mystery. Although the significance of the symbols will never be known for certain, educated guesses can be made.

The Field Guide brings together 600 commentaries on specific symbols by over one hundred archaeologists, anthropologists, researchers, and Native American informants. Intended to be used in the field, as well as a reference, the book includes a pictorial key at the beginning and is organized by tentative meaning or by description. The reader can easily find one or several of the 500 illustrations that most closely match the symbol in question.

Patterson emphasizes the tentative nature of the interpretations and has included an index by neutral archaeological description as well as complete documentation of every excerpted comment. The range of the book is from the northern states of Mexico to Utah and from California to Colorado.

Adopt-a-Bighorn

Bighorn sheep are sometimes called a “wilderness species” because they require some of the most remote and protected areas in the West. Today, Zion visitors may be lucky enough to see a bighorn in the park, but this has not always been the case, for Zion’s bighorn history is a tumultuous one.
Zion has long been home to bighorn, for they are well-depicted in prehistoric petroglyphs and were often seen in the early days of European settlement. However, combined stresses from human settlement led to their extinction in Zion in the 1950’s. Their historic range lay vacant for over 20 years until the 1970’s when bighorn were returned to the park through an intensive reintroduction program. Only 12 bighorn were brought to Zion to re-establish the population, and despite the odds, they have prospered and the population is now estimated to be over 150 individuals.
By joining the Adopt-a-Bighorn program, you can help protect the desert bighorn sheep, the park’s symbol of wilderness. When a park supports a healthy population of such a sensitive species, it is proof of a healthy ecosystem and its ability to support many other wildlife species, including mountain lions, California condors, Mexican spotted owls, and peregrine falcons.

Application Fee for Artist in Residence Program (440-000)

Zion National Park Artist in Residence Program

The Zion National Park Artist in Residence program offers professional artists the opportunity to live and work in the majestic desert environment of southern Utah for a period of one month. The works completed under this program will contribute to the public understanding and appreciation of Zion National Park and should reflect the National Park Service’s mission to the preservation and protection of the park’s cultural and natural resources. In addition, the program’s intent is to foster the connection between unspoiled natural settings and artistic pursuit. It is the park’s hope that works produced during this time will characterize Zion for present and future generations and offer park visitors and the general public the opportunity to see America’s heritage through the creative vision of contributing artists.

Introduction

Artists have been an important part of the national park system for over a century. Their works have had a long-standing impact on the establishment, expansion, and direction of our national parks, while creating a permanent record of these treasured places. In many instances, they have served as a voice for conservation through their various mediums, allowing the park visitor the chance to see the diverse beauty and importance of wild places. The National Park Service hopes to continue in this historic tradition by providing artists the opportunity to draw inspiration from Zion’s sweeping landscapes and significant cultural resources. Selected artists will have the chance to translate this beauty into works that may bring new insights, enjoyment, and understanding of this desert sanctuary.

How the Program Works

For the Winter 2008 season, an artist will be selected to work in Zion for a four-week period during the month of November. The artist will be given either rent-free use of a campsite in the main canyon area of the park, or a furnished park house in the eastern section, at a slightly higher elevation. The furnished house is large enough to comfortably provide studio space. A stipend of $300 will be granted during the residency period.

Accepted artists will need to bring personal gear, bedding, art supplies, and must have reliable transportation. The artists should be self-sufficient and able to work independently in an isolated environment. The artist is expected to comply with all park regulations and policy governing park employees and visitors.

As part of the residency process, the artist will be expected to present one public program. This interaction can be tailored to an individual’s medium, interest, and experience and can be a demonstration, slide show, talk, exploratory walk, or similar presentation. Artists must provide their own supplies and equipment for these presentations. In addition, artists are encouraged to give public presentations in their community about their residency experience to further broaden the reach of the program’s purpose

The participating artists are required to donate, at the park’s choosing, an original piece of work from, and representative of, their residency in Zion National Park. Pieces will be donated to Zion Natural History Association (ZNHA). Donated work must be received no later than six months after the artist’s residency. Artists are also required to provide the copyright for this artwork to the National Park Service and ZNHA. The artist will retain a royalty-free, non-exclusive use license. The park and ZNHA will own the rights to reproduce the artwork and the work may be used in exhibits and for educational purposes.

Who’s Eligible?

Open to Utah residents, the Artist in Residence program will invite professional writers, composers, and all visual artists to pursue their particular art form while surrounded by the inspiring landscape of the park. Visual arts include painting, print making, sculpture, photography, video arts, and mixed media. Writers may include poets and authors of both fiction and non-fiction. Work submitted should be of professional quality and no student work will be eligible.

The Selection Process

A jury of representatives from the local art community, subject matter experts, and park personnel will review materials submitted. Selections will be made on the basis of merit and how a candidate’s work can advance the mission of Zion National Park and the National Park Service as well as enhance the growth of the artist’s work. The Superintendent of Zion National Park will have final approval of all selections. Any medium that involves collecting or altering park resources would be in conflict with national park preservation goals and would be deemed inappropriate for a residency. Selections will be made without regard to race, religion, sex, disability, marital status, age, or national origin.

Bern - Lower Zion Canyon Poster (799)

•The master photo is a photomontage of 12 separate photographs needed to capture the sweep of the original scene in high resolution, proper exposure and accurate focus. The result is the highest level of realism and clarity in a nearly-distortion-free image (as contrasted to employing a very-wide-angle or fisheye lens), and in some cases allows the creation of an image which has been heretofore difficult or impossible to capture on film -- especially with such accuracy, detail, clarity, fidelity and correct exposure across the entire image. The goal achieved was that of capturing the scene exactly as you would see it as you scanned the scene by rotating your eyes and head, not as an ordinary camera would distort it in trying to capture it.

•Please bear in mind that the images displayed on your computer screen do not begin to shown the incredible level of detail contained in the actual prints. You truly must see the print to believe the detail captured.

Bern-Angels Landing & Walter's Wiggles Poster (592)

Poster size: 12.0'' (30.5 cm) x 36'' (91.5 cm) (including border and title)

Angels Landing offers spectacular views of Zion Canyon. The narrow, steep trail along the ridge offers occasional support chains. Its major dropoffs, uneven surfaces and tricky footing make this a hike for sure-footed souls not afraid of heights. It rises to an elevation of 5790 ft (1765 m) above sea level, and a height of about 1400 ft (430 m) above the main canyon floor.

Cut into solid rock in 1926, the twisted series of 21 switchbacks leading from Refrigerator Canyon (at the bottom, right of the photo) to Scout Lookout (in the middle, left of the photo) is named "Walter’s Wiggles" after Walter Ruesch, the park’s first custodian and supervisor of the building of the West Rim Trail.

•Each master photo is a photomontage of several separate photographs (3 to 6, depending on the image) needed to capture the sweep of the original scene in high resolution, proper exposure and accurate focus.

•Each image comes with an educational sheet showing the names and elevations of key mountain peaks and other features and notes of interest.

•Please bear in mind that the images displayed on your computer screen do not begin to shown the incredible level of detail contained in the actual prints. You truly must see the print to believe the detail captured.

Beyond the Visible Landscape (1036)
Hard Cover Book

Certainly, Utah has the most colorful and varied landscape in the world: deep rugged canyons, plateaus, mesas, escarpment and alpine scenery.
And yet there is much more. Beyond the visible landscape are panoramas of scenes which were formed and evolved since the beginning of time. Vestiges of these landscapes are there for all to see but we must first learn how to observe and discover that which is not readily apparent. Perhaps even more important are those that remain invisible because of our limitations in background, knowledge and experience.
There is no better place to see and appreciate the beauty, history and wonders of the landscape than in Utah.
This book is unique in that is consists of a series of panoramic photographs, most of them taken from the air. It offers a distinct departure from the landscape photographs we are accustomed to and allows us to examine scenes in new and exciting ways.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY OUTDOORS: (1025)
A Field Guide for Adventure & Travel Photographers

A professional writer and photographer who has long chronicled his adventures as a mountaineer and wilderness traveler, James Martin is uniquely positioned to help others "gain the most from swapping chemicals for silicon." In Digital Photography Outdoors, he begins with the basics: how a digital camera works, special considerations for use in the field, and selecting the best equipment and most useful accessories for capturing outdoor action.
Martin presents the new rules of digital photography (why overexpose?) and reminds us of old rules that still apply (light and good composition remain key). He covers the fundamentals of digital editing, including selecting software tools, applying filters, creating the illusion of movement, and stitching photos together to create panoramas. It's about exploiting the advantages of digital, as well as meeting its challenges ("storing images safely becomes an obsession.") Martin also offers tips on care and maintenance of digital equipment in field conditions.
James Martin has written for Outdoor Photographer magazine and has seventeen books to his credit, most illustrated with his photos. He is represented by Getty Images and ImageState.

Donation to the Adopt-a-Bighorn Program (4222-1)

A resounding crack echoes through the canyons and across the slickrock expanses of Zion National Park wilderness: somewhere out there, two desert bighorn rams charge one another and clash horns in a spectacular fight for breeding rights.
By donating to the Adopt-a-Bighorn program, you can help protect the desert bighorn sheep, the park’s symbol of wilderness. When a park supports a healthy population of such a sensitive species, it is proof of a healthy ecosystem and its ability to support many other wildlife species, including mountain lions, California condors, Mexican spotted owls, and peregrine falcons.

Early Images of The Southwest - The Lantern Slides of Ansel F. Hall (2075)

9" (23 cm) wide x 8" (22 cm) high
90 pages
by Jack Turner

Beautiful lantern slides capture the essence of the early southwest.

The mysterious and timeless world of the desert Southwest is vividly brought to life in these rare, hand-tinted photographs for an historic 1930s expedition.

The Rainbow Bridge/Monument Valley Expedition of 1933-38 is generally regarded as "The Last Great Expedition" in the continental United States, and covered an area of the Southwest rarely seen previously by white people. Its lasting legacy was the generation of nearly 100 hand-tinted lantern slides, an unusual combination of painting and photography that produced pictures more beautiful and vivid than either art on its own. These images began as glass plate black and white transparencies, which were then were hand-tinted by artists working in New York and Berkeley. Shown here are Navajo people at work and play, abandoned cliff dwellings, haunting landscapes, and the castellated rock formations of the American Southwest.

Emma Lee (2245)

6" (15 cm) wide x 9" (23 cm) high
114 pages
by Juanita Brooks

Emma Batchelor was an English convert to the Mormon church who came to Utah with the Martin and Willie handcart companies. A plural wife of John D. Lee, she saw the best and the worst of polygamy and came as near to the stark tragedy of the Mountain Meadows Massacre as one could without participating firsthand.

Through this biography of Emma Batchelor Lee French, Juanita Brooks has captured the strength, adventure, and tragedy of one woman's life on the western frontier.

"Brooks writes with a depth of feeling and insight possible only to one with her knowledge of the southern frontier of Mormondom and her grasp of the affairs of Emma Lee."

Field Institute Seminars and Courses

Sign-Up Packet: Upon receipt of your registration form, full payment and signed liability waiver, you will be sent an information packet that includes further details about your class, an entrance fee waiver (only for participants pre-registered by mail or over the phone; if you have already paid park fees, we cannot reimburse you or discount your class fees), a required equipment list and general information to help prepare you for your visit.

Food and Drink: Unless otherwise noted in the course descriptions, participants must provide their own food and beverages. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted on workshops. Participants should remember that water is especially important and to bring more than they expect to need (at least one gallon per person per day). Locations in the park and in nearby Springdale will provide box lunches for a fee, but please plan ahead to be sure these will be available the day of your trip. Limited groceries are also available in Springdale. Some workshops provide time for lunches at restaurants in the park and Springdale with the group. Please be aware that several area restaurants accept cash, but do not accept credit cards.

Carpooling: Most Field Institute trips require that participants either ride on the park shuttle and/or carpool with other participants. Please be prepared for either of these options.

Cancellation Policy

In order to receive a refund of your class fees, you must notify ZCFI in writing of your cancellation 30 days prior to the beginning of the class (course fee refunded minus a 10% processing fee). We strongly suggest you purchase trip cancellation insurance as we are unable to process any refunds for cancellation made within 30 days of a scheduled class, even for medical and emergency reasons. ZCFI reserves the right to cancel Institute classes up to one week prior to their starting date if minimum enrollment is not met. A full refund will follow. The Institute may also amend trips due to weather and/or other conditions.

Discounts: Members of the Zion Natural History Association (ZNHA) recieve a 20% discount on class fees (unless otherwise noted under class description). See class registration form for information on joining the Zion Natural History Association.

Pets: Pets are not allowed on ZCFI workshops, however, nearby boarding facilities exist.

Safety

While ZCFI attempts to prevent dangerous situations, all Institute classes involve inherent risks. No registration will be processed without a signed waiver form. Zion National Park is an area with temperature extremes, steep cliffs, flash floods, wild animals, and varying altitudes. Classes often take place in remote areas that lack access to medical facilities and personnel. All classes involve field experience and require a degree of exertion ranging from moderate to strenuous. Participants MUST be in good physical condition prior to classes. All classes include hiking which may range from moderate to strenuous. Many classes hike off-trail. If participants have any doubts about their physical condition, they should consult their physician. If participants have any questions about the amount of or difficulty level of hiking for any trip, they should call the Field Institute for more information. Accident, baggage, health, and trip insurance are the responsibility of participants. For all trips, and particularly high altitude trips, visitors should allow themselves time before the trip to adjust to altitude changes.
This is a dry climate and it is particularly important to bring plenty of water on every trip, and to drink it.

Children: While some of our classes are geared for families, most are designed for adults. Each course description includes age requirements.
Exceptions may occasionally be made for educational purposes. Children under 18 years of age must always be accompanied by parents or guardians. Our “Explore Zion” custom workshops may be designed especially for your family. Call us for more information.

Foundation Donations

The newly formed Zion National Park Foundation is ready to embark on its first fundraising project. At the August 11, 2007 Zion Natural History Association board meeting, the Foundation Committee presented a proposal to raise funds for the rehabilitation of the historic Grotto Museum structure in Zion National Park. The project had been presented by Superintendent Jock Whitworth as a high park priority, and as a worthy undertaking for the Foundation. The board voted unanimously to support the proposal and plans are underway to begin raising money with a goal of completing the project in time for rededication of the structure during the Zion National Park Centennial celebration on July 31, 2009.
Funds raised will be used to repair and rehabilitate the stone building at the Grotto, midway up Zion Canyon, which was built in 1924 and was used as the park’s first museum. The handsome structure, which is currently in disrepair, will be used for Zion’s proposed Artist in Residence program for up to three months per year, and as volunteer and research housing for the remainder of the year.
The project, based on the Foundation’s commitment to raise matching funds, has been selected as one of 200 projects nationally that are eligible for National Park Service Centennial Initiative funding. The money raised by the Zion National Park Foundation will be matched by money from the Centennial Initiative if that initiative is passed by Congress.
ZNHA’s Foundation Committee Chairman David Clove said the Foundation is very excited to begin this new era of fundraising and especially pleased to start out on such an important project. “We will begin to contact friends of Zion National Park across the country and around the world and invite them to contribute to the rehabilitation of this beautiful and historic building.” He said, “We believe the members of ZNHA will be among the most gracious donors to this project.”
Superintendent Whitworth said the Grotto Museum was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987, and is the oldest structure still in use in the park. “It’s an excellent example of ‘NPS Rusti’ style architecture, which dominated park construction design throughout the 1920's and 1930's,” he said. “The intent of this style was to design buildings that would not intrude upon the natural scenic beauty and would blend with the specific terrain by using materials similar to the surrounding landscape.”
The Zion National Park Foundation will soon contact you by letter to let your know how you and others who love Zion National Park can contribute to this important project.

Hiking Utah (98)

6" (15 cm) wide x 9" (23 cm) high
248 pages
A Falcon Guide by Dave Hall

A great introduction to hikes in Utah.

Utah hikers face a delightful dilemma. There are so many choices-where does one begin! In the slickrock desert country of Arches and Canyonlands national parks! In the glacier-carved granite peaks of the Wasatch and Uinta ranges! In the broad, varied expanse of the Great Basin! Hiking Utah, formerly The Hiker's Guide to Utah, can help you decide.

This revised and updated guidebook is your introduction to day hikes and overnight adventures throughout Utah's backcountry. It includes more than 80 detailed hike descriptions written by veteran Utah hikers, over 50 black-and-white photos and maps, and vital information on safety, desert hiking, drinking water, and backcountry ethics.
Whether you're an experienced hiker or just starting out, Hiking Utah will tell you where to find bighorn sheep, canyon wrens, and cougar tracks in Escalante country; the Navajo sandstone of Kolob Arch; or Indian petroglyphs in Thompson Canyon. The book can take you to popular terrain and to little-known haunts for a lifetime of outdoor adventure. Don't leave home without Hiking Utah in your pack.

Human Adaptation to the Arid Environment
Jan 27, 2007

We will first define deserts and the factors which contribute to their existence. We will then explore human strategies for survival in desert environments. We will look at individual human beings’ adaptive behavior, and adaptive strategies for cultural groups. We will discuss Desert Archaic, Ancestral Puebloan, and Southern Paiute adaptations here in the southwest and compare and contrast it with contemporary approaches to desert living. As part of the class we will go out in the field and identify ethnobotanical uses of select plant species.

This class is part of the three part “desert trilogy” which includes this class, Water in the Desert and Architecture and the Environment. A 20% discount is offered to participants who register for all three at once.

I Was Called to Dixie - The Virgin River Basin: Unique Experiences in Mormon Pioneering (177)

6" (15 cm) wide x 9" (23 cm) high
684 pages
by Andrew Karl Larson

Andrew Karl Larson is the Director of the Division of Social Sciences at Dixie Junior College in St. George, Utah, from which institution he graduated in 1922. He has bachelor and master degrees from Brigham Young University and has done considerable graduate study at the University of Utah.

He was born in Washington, Utah, where the famous Cotton Factory was built during the 1860's. His father and paternal grandfather were called there by the church in 1861. His maternal great grandfather was Robert Dockery Covington, who, because of his experience with. cotton culture in Mississippi, was sent to colonize and preside at Washington in 1857 when that town was founded.

Mr. Larson has always lived in Utah's Dixie where he has spent his adult life-time teaching at Washington School, Hurricane High School, and Dixie College. His wife is Katharine Miles, granddaughter of Dixie's loved "poet laureate," Charles L. Walker. Their two children are a foster son Arthur F. Crosby (Mrs. Larson's nephew), and a daughter, Judith (Mrs. Hubert M. Hawkins). Both live in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mr. Larson decided to write this history many years ago while working on his thesis study, Agricultural Pioneering in the Virgin River Valley, under the direction of Dr. William J. Snow. He has devoted most of his spare time during the past twenty years to collecting information for I Was Called to Dixie.

Lytle Preserve
April 2 & 3, 2010

The Lytle Preserve is in the southwest corner of Utah where the Basin and Range Province of the Mojave Desert is juxtaposed to the Colorado River Plateau. The Preserve is at an unusual place in North America where unique geological formations and ecosystems overlap. The 462-acre Preserve is situated along the Beaver Dam Wash drainage at an approximate elevation of 2800 feet, one of the lowest points in Utah. Beaver Dam Wash drains south into Arizona, where it joins the Virgin River, a Colorado River tributary.

Plant and animal diversity offers an ironic contrast in what seems, at first, to be an inhospitable environment. The low elevation course of the entrenched Beaver Dam Creek has provided a pathway for plants, animals, and humans into the Beaver Dam Wash vicinity. A year-round water source on the Lytle Preserve is an unusual feature in the margin of the Mohave Desert, which extends into Utah at this point. The unusual combination of geology, climate, elevation and water supply supports many trees, shrubs, and wildlife, most of which are unique to this part of Utah.

Join a ZCFI geologist and botanist for a multi discipline study of this incredible natural resource. We will be camping on site at the Preserve. Each participant will need to bring their own camping gear and all food and drink supplies for two dinners, two breakfasts, and one or two lunches. NO ALCOHOL IS PERMITTED ON THE PRESERVE. There are showers and restrooms available on site as well.
Fee: $150.00

Night Sounds (9781584760658)

by Frank Gallo-Author Lori Lohstoeter-Illustrator
Hardcover-16 pages
In nature, we often hear the sound of a bird or an animal before we can see it. Our new Hear and There Books have the same effect. After reading a short riddle, children are asked "What am I?" By pushing a color-coded button on the sound strip, they can hear the call of the bird or the animal. When they pull the tab on the right page, the animal is revealed. To find out more about the featured bird or animal, readers can lift the flap on the left-hand page for more detailed information on its habitat, its young, and its behavior. Written by a professional naturalist, these books are beautifully illustrated, fun to listen to, and filled with interesting facts!
