Weekend and Star-Studded Skies at Cedar Breaks National Monument
At Cedar Breaks
National Monument, the aspen have started to turn to gold. Fall
days are cool and bright—perfect weather to hike the Alpine
Pond Trail where the red fruits of the Elderberry and wax currant
glow on the understory bushes.
To celebrate
the changing colors, the National Park Service will host a screening
of the musical Can’t Help Singing at Cedar Breaks National
Monument on Saturday, September 16. This 1944 “Technicolor”
movie was filmed in part at Cedar Breaks. The film will begin at
7:30 p.m. in the visitor center and is one and a half hours in length.
Park entrance fees will be waived starting at 7 p.m. for those attending
the movie.
Following the
screening, telescopes will be set up at the Point Supreme Overlook,
adjacent to the visitor center, and astronomer Steve Overholt will
be on hand to assist visitors in finding their way around the heavens
above the park. Cedar Breaks is a spectacular place to peer inside
another solar system. “Our 10,000 foot elevation combined
with minimal city light interference and generally clear night skies
are the envy of America,” says Park Superintendent Paul Roelandt.
“We appreciate the help from Steve Overholt and the Great
Basin Natural History Association in sponsoring these programs.”
Overholt will return to the park for another night of star-gazing
on Saturday, September 23.
Visitors are
encouraged to dress warmly, as nighttime temperatures could be in
the mid- to upper-30’s. Bring a thermos with warm beverages
and folding chairs, if you wish. Flashlights are a good idea to
assist you in finding your way to and from your car, but visitors
are asked to leave flashlights turned off at the observation site.
Cloudy skies
may limit night sky viewing, but the movie screening will still
be held in the visitor center this coming Saturday. Let’s
hope for clear weather on Saturday, September 16th and 23rd! Questions
